We are building ReceptomiX, a biochip platform technology for rapid measurement of flavour and health related properties.
Our co-founder Aria Samimi is fascinated by insect behavior and previously studied ants as early earthquake warning system and bees for mineral ore detection. In the early days of COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, there was a dire need for an early diagnostic tool that could rapidly identify the infection. Looking to build a start-up in the Netherlands to address this need through the extraordinary sensing capabilities of insects, he partnered with co-founder Leon Schipper, an industrial design engineer with start-up experience.
That's how InsectSense and its first technology, BeeSense were born. BeeSense trained honeybees to rapidly detect COVID-19-related volatile compounds. The concept demonstrated remarkable sensitivity and gained substantial international media attention (including Washington Post and The Economist)
Located in the Foodvalley region of the Netherlands, we soon caught the attention of flavour and food companies looking for an objective way to measure flavour on a large scale. This market need led to ReceptomiX: a biosensor technology inspired by insect antennae. Using living biosensors, ReceptomiX captures biological responses from hundreds of receptors simultaneously and in real time. Today, ReceptomiX stands as InsectSense's flagship technology, bringing insect-inspired sensing to applications across food and pharma industries to create real-world impact.
